More details from Jonathan Welsh.............

By the way Okoia bricks are fairly common in archaeological sites around Wanganui but their history has, so far, alluded me. I have driven past the old site of Okoia brickworks (about ten minutes east of Wanganui). I have also walked across a ford connecting an island in the Whanganui River with the 'mainland' made entirely from Okoia bricks. The ford is about 20 or so metres long and is quite wide as, I suspect cattle were once driven across it. You can only see the ford at low tide and few people knew it is there. Kind of suprised me when I accidently stumbled across it.
